Sometimes especially with my Raspberry Pi's devices would simply be unable to connect. Sometimes they could connect fine, but couldn't access any other devices on my network - yet as soon as the router was rebooted everything would work without a hitch. It has now been a month with this new router and I haven't had a single dropped connection, a single instance of my devices being unable to talk to each other. I have a laptop which has DR software on it to back up to a network drive, this used to fail to verify over wireless, so I ended up using a USB Ethernet port to have a hardline for the backup.

With this new router that too is no longer needed and the disk images verify across the network fine. Conditional forwarding on my Pi-Hole works now, again something that wasn't possible with the Archer. Networking Nirvana! In pretty much every which way this router is far superior to the ones I've used previously. And yet I've given it a fairly low rating. There is one glaring problem.. Traffic management, bandwidth monitoring, things like that. And I simply can't use them as the router isn't doing this, instead it sends all your traffic to a third party, Trend Micro.

It is a case of this is my data and I like to control it. While I can't completely avoid this given the despicable practices of pretty much every tech company out there, where I do have a choice I will opt hard for privacy and controlling my data. I can't even enable Quality of Service options to prioritize the traffic on my network as even that data has to be sent to a third party. It is nobodies business but my own what happens on my network.

I've used expressvpn on different devices for years and wouldn't dream of going online without one so I decided using a routers vpn client was the best way to protect the whole network and anyone who uses it.

Here are some figures on speeds I'm achieving. I pay for mb download and get around 6 mb upload. Speeds without vpn and using the 5GHz channel. Speeds using the vpn client with expressvpn. Tablets and phones all reach a minimum of 50 mb download speeds now there own processors aren't handling the encryption.

These speeds do vary depending on the time of day, the number of people online streaming amazon video, Netflix etc and which server I'm connected to. I am incredibly happy with how this router performs and it copes very well under heavy use and provides a strong WiFi signal. It's also proving to be very stable using Rmerlins firmware.

I use a vpn for the added security it provides and to help claw back some privacy from isp providers and especially the government who are trying to erode our online privacy and security which takes me to the AiProtection by Trend Micro which I do recommend because it provides an extra layer of online security but for me I'm sacrificing my privacy by using AiProtection which defeats the object of using a vpn to retain some privacy. After much research and not needing to spend a small fortune as its just my wife and I living in a 3 bed semi, I chose this to replace or rather work alongside our Vigin media Super hub 3 that was causing issues with devices losing connection and it was struggling to manage traffic efficiently. The Asus made an instant difference.

My wife has no issue with her phone and game consoles upstairs now and the app makes it easy to set up profiles for devices and how they use the Internet. Was straightforward enough to set up, the only issue was setting the Super hub to modem mode, the instructions online said it would change to a magenta colour light but in actual fact is more red leading me down the garden path and assuming it was overheating as per the virgin tech instructions I recommend using this or something if similar quality if you are having issues with the Virgin media supplied router.

We do not have the fastest internet so being able to adjust settings such as the bandwidth allowed for each device is great. The only thing to note with this is that it doesnt have a built in DSL modem. I had to buy a little bridge modem in order to solve this. This means that it has the modem built in. Having the 2 separate does allow for better levels of control though.
